Last month Nielsen Online reported that social networks and blogs are now the fourth most popular online activity, behind search, general interest portals, and software manufactures. For the first time, social networking jumped ahead of email by a small margin (66.8 percent to 65.1 percent). Time spent on social sites account for 10 percent of all Internet time and the popularity of social networking is growing three times faster than the overall Internet rate.
It's not just the kids who have adopted this form of communication. Baby boomers (45-63 year olds) account for the fastest growing demographic. Adoption rates for podcasts and blogs are up 67 percent and social networking is up 59 percent from 2007. Adoption rates for younger audiences have plateaued as it has already neared its saturation level over 80 percent.
